The Cape Hatteras National Seashore consists of over 70 miles of beautiful coastline that runs from Nags Head to Ocracoke. The nation's first national seashore, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is enjoyed by many each year for the variety of activities it has to offer. Whether you enjoy surf fishing, swimming, surfing, kiteboarding, or simply just relaxing on the beach with a book, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore is waiting for you.

There are three lighthouse structures located along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The Ocracoke Lighthouse is located here on Ocracoke Island and was built in 1823 to mark Ocracoke Inlet and Silver Lake Harbor. Ocracoke Lighthouse is the second oldest lighthouse in the United States in continuous service. A day trip to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton allows adventurers to enjoy the climb to the top for incredible 360 degree views. Further north, approximately 9 miles south of Nags Head, is the Bodie Island Lighthouse.

The National Park Service at Ocracoke Island Visitor Center offers a variety of educational programs, topics include: Barrier Island Nature, Outer Banks History, Graveyard of the Atlantic, Explore the Shore, Banker Ponies, and Morning Bird Walk, schedules and locations vary. What’s New – Off-Road Vehicle Usage Effect February 15, 2012
The Cape Hatteras National Seashore Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Management Plan pertains to driving motor vehicles on the beaches within the entire Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which includes Ocracoke Island.
