Ocracoke Island Hurricane Information

In the event of an approaching storm we will update this page with the current information and status, so please check back frequently. The most up to date information regarding any storm will be available on the links/web sites we have included below. While many owners and hundreds of guests are calling trying to find out if and when they can come or if they should leave, we'll do our best to post detailed information on our website so you won’t have to call.

If a storm is headed our way, the staff may be out in the field checking on and securing homes. We could be busy calling all the guests who are here and phone lines will be tied up. We also will be receiving information from local and county officials. We ask that you please check this website instead of calling us as we will post updates frequently. Our employees live here on the island and will also need to secure their own homes and many will also evacuate the island if the order is mandatory.

Please also read the information below. We have provided several links for your convenience: The Hyde County web site, Ferry service Information, neighboring Dare and Currituck County web sites, and the NC Department of Transportation . There are more LINKS below. For a point of reference regarding the following: Ocracoke is located in Hyde County. Nags Head, Manteo, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk are in Dare County. Once you cross the bridge in Kitty Hawk (headed north) you are in Currituck County. Ferry service ceases with the onset of gale force winds, please take this into consideration. Once an officially declared evacuation is issued then the Swan Quarter and Cedar Island ferries no longer accept or honor any reservations; it is all first come first served. If you are traveling south and/or west please do not wait thinking that you will be able to catch the ferry at the last minute.

If a mandatory evacuation is ordered by local officials while you are vacationing on Ocracoke Island, please take all your belongings with you; including food. The order to leave will be given in plenty of time by county officials. Depending on the severity and length of the storm and any storm damage, you may not be allowed back. The earlier you leave the better as traffic increases the closer the storm gets. If you are not planning on going all the way home and need hotel accommodations we advise that you call and make reservations ASAP; please see links at the bottom of this page. Evacuation routes are well marked with blue evacuation route signs. There are no shelters in Dare County, Currituck County or Hyde County. Inland shelter locations will be broadcast on local radio and TV stations (listed below) as the storm approaches.

If you have not arrived for your vacation yet and there is a storm approaching the area please check the website frequently for updates; listen to The Weather Channel (*note that the zip code for Ocracoke Island is 27960). You will also be able to obtain information by going to the links to various county agencies that are provided below. If you are coming from or headed to the North, you will need to go thru Currituck County and Dare County, so we have included links to the web sites for both counties. These web sites are managed and updated by the counties or federal government on a regular basis. Most of the information we receive comes directly from the Dare County, Currituck County and Hyde County Emergency Management agencies.

If there is a mandatory evacuation order in effect for Ocracoke, you may be able to continue your vacation on the northern end of the Outer Banks. Village Realty may be able to accommodate you. They may be reached by calling 1-800-548-9688. First Colony Inn is a 26 room Bed & Breakfast located in Nags Head and may also have rooms available. The phone number is 1-800-368-9390. Links to hotels and motels out of the area are included at the bottom of this page.

In the event of a mandatory evacuation that cuts your week short, there are no refunds if you decline the trip insurance; please be smart and protect yourself and your vacation.

There are no Red Cross approved shelters in Dare County, Currituck County or Hyde County. If a mandatory evacuation is ordered please take all your belongings with you; including food.
