Trash Pick-Up Information

Homes in Ocracoke

All properties on public roads are served by Hyde County and have trash picked-up on Mondays and Thursdays year round. Homes located on private roads and dirt roads are serviced by a private contractor who picks up trash on either Saturday and Wednesday or on Sunday and Thursday depending upon the checkin day. In either case please look for the trash racks at the end of your driveway. Trash collection is usually early in the mornings so we recommend that you put your trash out the night before to ensure pickup. Please make sure that all your trash is bagged and tied and placed in the proper cans for pick up. Unbagged trash will not be picked up, and you may be charged a cleanup fee.

Recycling and Large Items

We encourage recycling on Ocracoke Island. Recycling bins are located at the Sheriff’s office. In order to avoid a fine, please note that anything that can't be bagged (chairs, umbrellas etc.) needs to be taken to the dump located at the Sheriff’s station.

Thank you for your attention to these schedules. Please do not leave your trash in the house or in the trash receptacles under the house. This is important for you as well as those coming after you.

The large roll-out trash receptacles must be out the night before pick-up, as the trucks come very early in the morning. Receptacles must be rolled to the edge of the street with the handles facing the house. The trash is picked up by automated trucks and must be positioned correctly. Please roll the cans back after pick-up.
