TestimonialsMay 2011 The views that Catbird Seat offered were truly amazing! Plus, we enjoyed the convenient location of the home. Although the home is located within a quick walk to shops & restaurants, it was quietly tucked away in a nice corner of Ocracoke -- The Valgus Family
April 2011 We absolutely loved the charm of The Catbird Seat. The views and quiet location were perfect! The layout and decor of the house were warm and charming, making us feel at "home". The kitchen was fully stocked with dishes, pots/pans, utensils, etc.....the only thing missing was tupperware type storage pieces. We will be back to Ocracoke....we make the trip annually and are already wanting to be back!! -- Gail
June 2007 "We did it! We got the dream house! Thank you, Susie, for suggesting we do a walk through of several favorites. We LOVE the Catbird Seat and, lucky for us, we are first in line to book it for next year, 2007. Enclosed is the "hold that dreamhouse" check. Thank you for all you do. XOXOXO" -- The Anderson Family
April 2007 My family and I recently returned from our third visit to that little slice of paradise known as Ocracoke, NC, and we now believe that we have found the absolute best place on the island to spend our time - when not strolling around the village or enjoying the beach, that is. Henceforth, this WILL be our address whenever we find the time to visit this island. Here's why.
"Location, location, location …" "The Catbird Seat" is ideally situated at the end of a quiet road on the eastern outskirts of the Village of Ocracoke, a short block and a half or so from NC 12 but a world away from noise and traffic. It perches like a heron on the edge of the marshes, with mile-plus views to the east and south opening from the huge screened porches and acres of windows in the living area on the top floor. These expansive vistas, which extend out over the marshes all the way to the ocean to the east and the channel between Ocracoke and Portsmouth Island to the south, are nearly devoid of any sign of other human habitation, contributing to a unique feeling of peace, privacy, privilege, and oneness with the astounding natural beauty of the Island. Relaxing in a gentle breeze to watch a sunrise or sunset from the peace and quiet of the porch, there is little to disturb your reverie other than the small sounds of the birds and other wildlife in the surrounding marsh. And despite this "end of the earth" quality, the Village of Ocracoke, with all of its charm and opportunities for dining, entertainment, shopping and sight-seeing, is no more than an easy and pleasant stroll away; the beach no more than a short bicycle ride.
In case it isn't obvious already, I'd go back to the Catbird Seat on the strength of its location alone, even if it was just a tar-paper shack, but that is far from the case.
The house itself is spacious, modern, beautifully constructed, extremely well maintained, tastefully decorated, well furnished, and thoughtfully appointed in all respects. It has all the comforts of home and every modern convenience - even including satellite HDTV and high-speed internet access for those of you who can't just "let it go" for a while. The top floor includes the spacious, light and airy main living area - a vast, open "great room" with vaulted ceiling, fully equipped modern kitchen, breakfast bar, living, and dining areas. This size of this already spacious venue is enhanced by the broad and inviting screened porches on two sides, accessed through two sets of French doors off the living area. Also on the top floor are a full bathroom and a spacious bedroom. The lower floor has the master bedroom and bath, an additional bedroom and a study. The already-luxuriously-proportioned master bedroom is further enhanced by another wrap-around screened porch on the east and south, which offers additional views of the marshes filtered through the indigenous evergreens.
In summary, I give the Catbird Seat my highest recommendation and I'd encourage anyone considering a visit to this special island at the end of the earth to give it serious consideration as a solution to your lodging needs - just as long as they don't conflict with MY lodging needs. You won't be disappointed. -- Tom Handel, Annapolis, MD
August 2006 I sort of accidentally discovered this house in 2006, when I was visiting the top floor deck to check out the view. To put it mildly, I was blown away. I've stayed in many houses and motels in Ocracoke for 30+ years. The view from the deck was amazing: 270 degrees of nothing but marsh, sound, dunes, and ocean and nothing man-made in between.
It was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a place that was in Ocracoke, but had a back-to-nature, out-of-the-way feel and PRIVACY! As small as Ocracoke is, I never thought I would find a place like that here. What a discovery! AND it was for sale!
So, I bought it! I love it. This is THE best place I have ever stayed in on the island. Hope yall enjoy it as much as I do. -- HG, Virginia
