Just in time for the Annual Ocracoke Fig Festival on August 18th and 19th. Around Ocracoke Village fig enthusiasts have begun their daily visits to their trees checking for ripeness. So begins an annual tradition dating back to the 1700’s.
On a recent walk around town, residents were eager to share their plans for their figs, show their trees and share the tree’s history. Most admitting they are not fig experts, everyone is quick to mention ninth generation Ocracoke native Chester Lynn as being the local expert on Ocracoke Figs. Chester will be giving a presentation at the Fig Festival and can also be found at his shop, Annabelle’s Florist and Antiques on Back Road.
The showpiece of the Fig Festival is the Fig Cake Bake-Off which includes entries in the Traditional and Innovative categories. A panel of judges will select the winners and there are free samples after the contest!
Local residents will be selling figs, fig preserves, deserts, cookbooks, fig-smoked BBQ, and other various fig items.
There will be a Traditional Ocracoke Square Dance and a dance with music by the Ocracoke Rockers. There are even activities for the kids!
The Ocracoke Fig Festival will take place at two historic locations in Ocracoke Village; the Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum and the historic Community Square on Silver Lake Harbor.
