Ocracoke Celebrates Independence Day July 2-4
JULY 2 – FIREWORKS AT THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE DOCKS
The holiday festivities begin with DJ Tommy spinning tunes starting at 6 pm. The spectacular fireworks display takes place at 9:15 pm. The night’s activities all take place at the National Park Service docks near the OPS Museum and ferry terminal. Biking and walking are the best forms of transportation for this event. Fireworks will be visible everywhere around Silver Lake Harbor and from decks nearby.
JULY 3 – SCAVENGER HUNT
The family friendly island-wide scavenger hunt takes place throughout the village from 11am–2pm. Participants in this fun filled event are sure to learn history and new things about the island.
JULY 3 – OLD FASHIONED SQUARE DANCE
Old fashioned Ocracoke square dance with Molasses Creek in the Berkley Barn 6:30-8:30pm.
JULY 4 – MEET THE OCRACOKE PONIES
Meet the Ocracoke poneis and learn about their living history on Ocracoke Island at the National Park Service Pony Pens. 9:30am.
JULY 4 - SAND SCULPTURE CONTEST
The Sand Sculpture Contest takes place at the National Park Service Lifeguard Beach from 9:30 am–noon. People's choice awards and cash prizes are given out at the Awards Ceremony. Sign-up starts at 9am. Join the contest and get ready for a fun filled and creative experience.
JULY 4 - VIEW INSIDE THE LIGHTHOUSE
View inside the lighthouse 10:30am-12:30pm and 1:30pm-4:30pm. Learn about the history of the Ocracoke Lighthouse with Chester Lynn 10:30am -12:30pm. No climbing.
JULY 4 – OLD TIME OCRACOKE PARADE
All are welcome to enter the parade. Theme: Famous Duos. Cash prizes will be awarded. Starting at 4 PM, the parade begins at Wheelie Fun Golf Carts, turns left on Lighthouse Rd., right on Creek Rd., right on Silver Lake Dr., follow the road around the harbor to the parade's end at Nation Park Service parking lot. View the parade anywhere along the route. Sign-up starts at 3pm at Wheelie Fun Golf Carts.
JULY 4 – SINGING OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AND AWARDS CEREMONY
At 5:30 pm there will be a singing of the National Anthem and awards presentation for the Sand Sculpture and Parade on the lawn at Books to Red. BYO seating.
JULY 4 – STORYTELLING BY DONALD DAVIS
Donald Davis is one of the most prominent figures in storytelling. Donald travels throughout the US, has written 18 books, and is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Awards from the National Storytelling Network. Donald is a delight to watch and listen to and the perfect ending to an exciting day. 5:45-6:30pm. BYO seating.
JULY 4 – COMMUNITY BEACH FIRE
Community Beach Fire under the stars at the NPS Lifeguard Beach. BYO chairs. You are welcome to bring marshmallows to roast. 7-10pm.
