Located across the Ocracoke Inlet, Portsmouth Island is part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore Portsmouth was once the largest settlement on the Outer Banks. The Civil War and savage storms played a big part in making it the “ghost” village it is today. Some of the buildings are open to the public including the U. S. Life Saving Station, Methodist Church, U.S. Post Office and General Store, and Village Visitor Center. Partially restored, it offers the ultimate in solitude. In addition to Portsmouth Village, the island offers thirteen miles of unspoiled beach providing a haven for beachcombing, shelling, fishing and simply relaxing. Portsmouth Island is accessible only by boat, and be prepared for mosquitoes. Repellent is a MUST! For transportation from Ocracoke to Portsmouth Island call the Austin’s at (252) 928-5431 to book a trip to visit the village or beaches. Enjoy the Portsmouth Island shelling experience! Shelling tours are available spring through fall. Tours can be scheduled by calling Portsmouth Island Adventures (Formerly Portsmouth Island ATVS) at (252) 928-4484. No ATV trips available in 2021 but plenty of shelling!
