Ocracoke Island sunsets are spectacular. So it’s no surprise that watching the sunset is one of our favorite Ocracoke Island activities. Depending on where you are on the island, you will experience a different view of the sky, the water, and the landscape. You can even see the sunset from the water on a boat cruise or a late day kayak.

SUNSET CRUISE ON THE WINDFALL II

Experience an Ocracoke sunset aboard the schooner Windfall II. Departing from Ocracoke’s historic Community Square for a 1.5-hour sail, you will visit Teach’s Hole where the infamous Blackbeard the pirate met his demise in 1718. Sit back and relax or join Captain Rob Temple in hoisting the sails.

Visitors to Ocracoke will enjoy the new spacious waterfront decks at Ocracoke’s Community Square. Relax and enjoy views of Silver Lake Harbor at sunset. Afterward, stop for an evening treat at The Fudge & Ice Cream Shop in the Community Square or stroll to one of Ocracoke’s other popular ice cream shops.

The National Park Service Boat Ramp in Ocracoke village not only offers boaters access to Pamlico Sound. It is a favorite spot for panoramic views of Ocracoke sunsets over the sound. Take a stroll, grab your bike or golf cart. Prefer to drive? There is plenty of parking. You will find this popular spot on the waterfront at the end of the large parking lot near the Cedar Island and Swan Quarter ferry docks.

Be sure to visit the Ocracoke Lighthouse at sunset. As the sun sets over the Pamlico Sound to the west, the sky surrounding the lighthouse becomes ablaze with colors.

Walk or bike down historic Lighthouse Road passing by the Ocracoke Lighthouse and on to Loop Road where you will find the Coastal Land Trust’s Springer’s Point Preserve. Arrive early, explore the trail leading to the Pamlico Sound. Enjoy a spectacular sunset before heading back to the village from this preserve that is open during daylight hours. Legend tells that this site was a favorite haunt of the legendary pirate, Blackbeard, who met his fate at Teach’s Hole, off Springer’s Point. Dogs are welcome on leash. Plan to travel to the preserve by foot or bicycle as there is no parking available.

SMACNALLY’S RAW BAR AND GRILL

SmacNally’s Raw Bar and Grill is a casual outdoor restaurant located at the Anchorage Inn Marina. The marina is home to several of Ocracoke’s offshore charter boats. Enjoy an amazing sunset view or you might want to arrive around 4 p.m. to view the day’s catch being unloaded from the boats. Lunch, dinner or drinks be sure to visit this popular waterfront restaurant. Pets are welcome!

Ocracoke offers several popular places for dinner or drinks with a sunset view. Jolly Roger Pub & Marina is an authentic waterfront restaurant. For decades, the Jolly Roger has been a favorite of both locals and visitors. Located on Silver Lake Harbor, the Jolly Roger offers sunset views from covered and open dining or take a stroll out on the dock. Sail into the Jolly Roger Pub & Marina and tie up at the dock for lunch or dinner. Located at the north end of Ocracoke village you will find Howard’s Pub and 1718 Brewing/Plum Point Kitchen. Both of these popular businesses offer delicious food and drinks. Their second floor decks offer panoramic views, perfect for relaxation. Enjoy a refreshing beverage and an Ocracoke sunset. Howard’s Pub even offers distant ocean views!
