Great beach cottage with fabulous views. Beds were comfortable, house was clean, and everything was working as it should. The porch definitely hadn’t been swept out in a while, lots of sand, dust, and dead bugs sort of piled along the edges and corners but that’s about all I can say that is negative about our stay. The yard was totally flooded and unusable but I don’t fault the owners for that, especially given the time of year that we visited. I’ve been visiting the island for over 30 years and it was a real nostalgic treat staying at this cottage. I really appreciate the old school vibe coupled with some very thoughtful modern updates.

Thank you for your review. We're glad you enjoyed the cottage's mix of old‑school charm with thoughtful updates — and that your stay felt nostalgic after 30 years on the island. Thanks also for your understanding about the yard flooding. We look forward to welcoming you back to Ocracoke soon!

For us it has been two decades of renting this home, and as usual, Stromayer Cottage never disappoints! It may not be for everybody, but we love the breezy, rustic charm. Thank you for the new mini-splits (AC is somehow more important in my old age?) and the new mattresses and microwave, and we were so happy to see landscapers have saved the fig tree, which had too many figs to eat ripening up, so next tenants: enjoy those figs! There is one burner on the stove we could not get going(front right), and the freezer motor would occasionally erupt in a loud noise, but it would eventually stop. There are a few wall planks that need to be reattached to the outdoor shower but we set it back up pretty well. We bought and donated some thrift-store measuring cups?. Nothing is better than being on Ocracoke, in Stromayer Cottage, with a front-row seat oceanside and a gorgeous top-level view of the sound. Thank you for another glorious two weeks!

It wasn't the OIR people that gave us any trouble. In fact they bent over backward to make things better. It was the rental property itself: A large number of windows either could not be opened because there was no screen; or you could open the window, but the window had to be propped open with a stick or it would slam down on the sill (think guillotine). The kitchen had nothing left but cooking gear (only one saucepan, but it had no lid; no measuring cups, no storage containers with lids). Usually previous guests leave some spices, salt and pepper, a bit of saran wrap or aluminum foil, a little leftover laundry detergent, etc. There weren't even 'twisties' to secure opened plastic bags. Apparently pirates had come through before we got there. [Strohmeyer Cottage]
