Very Disappointed

Overall Rating

We have stayed in Ocracoke Island Real Estate properties several times and have always been very satisfied with the condition and cleanliness of the houses. Not so this time. We arrived on Sunday afternoon and immediately discovered that the carpet next to the second floor bedroom was sopping wet. Applying towels to soak up the water did not make a dent and we had to ask for more towels, most of which were used for the same process. We were informed that this condition had occurred before and the owner had been informed but had done nothing to correct the problem. Evidently it happens after every hard rain. The smell of mustiness was unpleasant and we noticed what appeared to be black mold forming on the edges of the carpet near the sliding door. We also noticed that the screen on the sliding door off the living area was torn and useless for preventing mosquitoes and beetles from entering the living space. We found a broken cover to a light fixture cover on the same deck so that there is a 2-inch gap exposing fixture wiring to the weather. We had our young grandchildren with us and we had to use duct tape to secure the cover to the fixture so they wouldn't be tempted to stick their fingers in the gap and touch the wires. On Friday night, after spending a few hours around a beach campfire, my daughter could not turn off the water valve on one of the 1st floor bath tubs. The handle turned but would not close the valve. As it was after hours, we called the emergency number for assistance. One of OIRE's maintenance men arrived but was also unable to turn off the valve. He had no recourse but to turn off the water to the entire house. We had no running water at all until around 9:30 the next morning when a plumbing crew was able to replace the valve. We found many other things throughout the week that indicate that the house, a relatively new one, built within the last five or six years, has not received the upkeep that it should be getting to remain a desirable habitation: rusty shower rod and curtain holders, deck rails with chipping paint and rust spots, windows that won't remain open, unsecured drawer fasteners, screens with holes and tears, light fixtures that flicker and/or extinguish and then re-light, etc. Finally, the house has five very nice TVs. However, the video quality on all of them is so poor that they are effectively unwatchable. The TVs themselves are not to blame, as the video when ported through a ROKU device is crystal clear and HD quality. The fault may lie with the TV service provider, but it should not be the responsibility of the renter to deal with them. All in all, we did not receive the full benefit of the rental fee that we paid and the pleasure we should have had during our stay was greatly reduced by the house conditions we experienced. I would not recommend this house to anyone, especially at the price asked.
Manager's Response: We are sorry to hear that Seas The Day did not meet your expectations. Fortunately, we were able to resolve most of the issues you brought to our attention, and the owners are aware of the leak at the door and plan to address that this winter, as well as other needed maintenance items. The local cable company is also working to improve their signal in that neighborhood. Thank you for your feedback and we hope you will visit again soon.

Off season visit, first time to the island. Plenty still to do for us, fantastic house, great balconies, close walk to the beach, well supplied kitchen. Friendly and helpful locals, great town. Really had a great relaxing visit

Our family has been visiting Ocracoke annually for 25 years and we've stayed at many properties over the years. seas the day has a well equipped kitchen, a multitude of deck spaces-allowing for private space for cohabitating families, a great outside shower and an open feeling living space. added bonus that our dog could vacation too! Sadly, we found the beds universally uncomfortable (too soft).
