1. Scallywag 5k/10k & 1/2 Marathon

April — A late-April runfest brings the whole island to life with a half-marathon, 5K, 10K, and a one-mile family fun run.

What about a burst of excitement to unleash that pent-up energy? This late-April runfest brings the whole island to life with a half-marathon, 5K, 10K, and a one-mile family fun run. The courses wind through historic village roads, past Silver Lake Harbor, and right by the Ocracoke Lighthouse, so you get charming views with every step.

Everyone who joins walks away with a T-shirt and a medal, so you're already winning just by showing up. Of course, the top three men and women in each race take home extra bragging rights.

Runners of all levels flock to this event, and the energy around the village is contagious. Even if running isn't your thing, it's still a fantastic weekend to be on the island, soak up the excitement, and enjoy the festivities.

2. Waterfowl Festival

April — An event bringing together everyone from seasoned collectors to first-time visitors who just want to see something cool.

The traditional duck decoys carved by Ocracoke's artisans are a huge part of the island's history and culture. And if you've ever been curious about how these little works of art come to life, the Annual Ocracoke Island Waterfowl Festival is your perfect excuse to dive in. Usually held in April and hosted by the Ocracoke Island Decoy Carvers Guild, this event brings together everyone from seasoned collectors to first-time visitors who just want to see something cool.

You'll spot carvings of all kinds: redheads, ruddy ducks, sprigtail, blue bills, ringnecks, swans, geese, and plenty of shorebirds. There's also artwork, local crafts, and tons of waterfowl-inspired pieces tied to North Carolina's long-standing traditions. And yes, you can take home goodies like T-shirts, posters, raffles, and plenty of handmade treasures.

Kids get their own set of fun activities, and the bake sale is always a hit if you've got a sweet tooth. It's quirky, charming, and unlike anything else on the island. Truly a one-of-a-kind event!

3. EARTH DAY WEEKEND CELEBRATION

April — Nature walks, gardening sessions, crafts, history talks, and hands-on activities focused on simple ways to live greener.

The Annual Ocracoke Earth Day Weekend Celebration is your chance to enjoy the island's natural beauty while pitching in to protect it. The whole event is about community, sustainability, and showing a little love to the place we all enjoy.

You'll find a mix of nature walks, gardening sessions, crafts, history talks, and hands-on activities focused on simple ways to live greener. There's also live music and stargazing, so you can unwind and soak up the magic of the island after a day of learning and exploring.

The weekend wraps up with a beach fire, s'mores, and a big community gathering at the lifeguarded beach, a warm, laid-back way to celebrate the island and commit to keeping it thriving for years to come.

4. OVFD Fireman's Ball

May — Live music, dancing, a silent auction, and other entertainment activities.

Hosted in May by the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department, the OVFD Fireman's Ball typically features live music from three bands, dancing, a silent auction, and other entertainment activities. The main objective is a fundraiser for the fire department, but one can actually consider it a highlight of the community's social calendar.

Yes, it's a ball, but don't go expecting gowns and tuxedos; the atmosphere is a lot more laid back. The event starts with a barbecue and includes both a silent auction and a live auction that encourages fun bidding wars.

Following the auctions, live music takes over the space, and dancing goes into the very late hours, with bands mostly cranking out awesome rock ˜n roll. The event is a blazing ball of fun. Lucky for us, the fire department is close by!

5. Ocrafolk Festival

June — Ocrafolk Festival turns the island into a three-day playground of art and music.

Presented by Ocracoke Alive and packed with musicians, storytellers, artisans, and all kinds of creative characters, the Ocrafolk Festival turns the island into a three-day playground of art and music.

Strolling around the festival grounds is half the fun. You might stumble into a traditional Ocracoke square dance, catch a giant puppet parade rolling by, or drop into a workshop you didn't even know you needed. The artisan village is a treasure trove of handmade finds, and kids get in on the action, too. Making fish-print T-shirts with the catch of the day is always a hit.

Ocracoke Alive, the nonprofit behind the festival, works year-round to lift local arts, culture, education, and the environment. Even better, festival proceeds go right back into student and community programs. Great vibes, great cause, that's an easy yes.

6. Independence Day Celebration

July — Fireworks, a parade, and plenty of family-friendly fun.

Even though a tiny coastal village, Ocracoke goes big with Independence Day celebrations, offering everything you could wish for: fireworks, a parade, and plenty of family-friendly fun.

Every year, the city hosts an amazing fireworks display over the Ocracoke Harbor, providing a comfortable spectacle with plenty of space and seating along the harborfront docks. Still, the fun starts even before the 4th of July. On July 2nd, a pre-fireworks gathering happens at the NPS docks with great music, and the days that follow are also full of festivity.

On the 4th, there's a sculpture contest and the much-anticipated parade. After the fireworks are done, the community joins at the beach for a community bonfire.

Overall, the whole holiday is super fun in Ocracoke, offering a fantastic time to meet locals and celebrate with great patriotic vibes!

 7. Fig Festival

August — Demos, porch talks, and vendors selling everything from fig preserves to fig cakes, fig trees, and local cookbooks.

This festival shines a spotlight on one of Ocracoke's sweetest traditions, figs! The island grows all kinds, from Sugar and Pound to Blue and Celeste, each with its own flavor and story. Curious to taste them all? This two-day celebration has you covered.

You'll find demos, porch talks, and vendors selling everything from fig preserves to fig cakes, fig trees, and local cookbooks. There's live music, dancing, and plenty of family fun, including old-fashioned crafts and games. You'll probably catch a traditional Ocracoke square dance, too.

And the star of the show? The Fig Cake Bake-Off. Visitors and locals can enter, choosing between the "traditional" or "innovative" categories. Think you've got a winning recipe?

8. OCRACOKE'S SEAFOOD FESTIVAL

August — Indulge in a feast of fish, crabs, shrimp, and lots more.

Speaking of food festivals, Ocracoke's Seafood Festival is a fantastic celebration that pays tribute to the abundance of the local waters, allowing visitors to indulge in a feast of fish, crabs, shrimp, and lots more.

The main attraction is, of course, the variety of seafood dishes prepared by local vendors, ensuring a true taste of the island's coastal flavors.

This one is also a fundraising event with the goal of supporting the Ocracoke Health Center. You know what that means: you'll be able to immerse yourself in a delightful culinary experience while supporting a good cause.

9. BLACKBEARD'S PIRATE JAMBOREE

November— A weekend-long adventure diving straight into Ocracoke's pirate past and delivering non-stop fun for the whole family.

As the name suggests, Blackbeard's Pirate Jamboree is no ordinary festival. This weekend-long adventure dives straight into Ocracoke's pirate past and delivers non-stop fun for the whole family.

You'll enjoy a historically accurate pirate encampment, a full reenactment of Blackbeard's final battle, living-history exhibits, sea shanties, live music, and a bustling marketplace. There's plenty to explore.

One of the big moments comes when the pirate and militia crews march to Springer's Point to honor those lost in Blackbeard's last stand. A cannon salute follows, so get ready to cover your ears.

And yes, you can go full pirate mode. Visitors are encouraged to dress up, talk like a pirate, and enjoy all the photo ops that come with it. It's hard to beat the vibe, and even harder not to join in.

10. FESTIVAL LATINO DE OCRACOKE

November — A colorful festival featuring music, folk dances, incredible food, games, and more.

Ocracoke is also home to some vibrant Latino traditions, and since the island is all about community, there's also a festival for that. The colorful and fun Festival Latino de Ocracoke happens in collaboration with Ocracoke Alive, featuring music, folk dances, incredible food, games, and more.

Wondering about the food? You can indulge in a variety of authentic Mexican and Latin American cuisine, from traditional dishes like tacos, tamales, and empanadas to flavorful salsas and guacamole.

The festival is a real two-day "fiesta" with performances, workshops, live music, and many other traces of cultural diversity and entertainment. Latino festivals are known for their joyful and festive atmosphere, and this one is definitely no different!
